Biomechanics for Golf

So . . . you see your Golf Pro once a week and your game is steadily improving.  Great!  But then it plateaux, intermittently sprinkled with a few outstanding and a few appalling games.  Why are you not as consistent as you ought to be?

In addition to this, how’s that pain in your hip?  How many holes can you achieve before reaching for the Ibruprofen?

Frustratingly, you are doing exactly what your Pro has taught you, but maybe your body just isn’t co-operating. Perhaps it’s time to consider your INSTRINSIC BIOMECHANICS. What exactly is happening within your body while you are attempting that backswing . . . transition . . . down swing . . . and follow through?

There are many “norms” within the Golf swing plane.  Every golfer is unique, but the complex recruitment of joints, muscles, nerves and myofascia, SIMULTANEOUSLY remains very similar.

It is important to find out why the swing is incorrect before trying to change the club face angle or grip or ball position . . .

Let’s think INTRINSICALLY for a moment . . . keeping it as simple as possible . . .

Don’t forget that you are also holding a very thin club, trying to hit a very small ball, aiming to drop it into a very small hole !!!!!!  Ummmm, it’s IMPOSSIBLE to keep it simple.

  • The feet are connected to the knees, hips, spine, head, shoulders, arms and hands.
  • These joint are moved, rotated and stabilised by muscles and fascia, in many different directions with varied forces acting upon them.  All the while, the brain is recruiting the nervous system to send and receive messages instantaneously.

Golf is an incredibly challenging sport to start with - INTRINSIC BIOMECHANICS just adds a fresh dimension to it.

Hang in there . . . I’m going to make it easier for you . . .

  1. 1
You employ a Golf Pro, to show you how to play the game.
  2. 2
You employ the services of an Intrinsic Biomechanics Coach - to show you how your body is working?

An Intrinsic Biomechanics Coach - preferably one who specialises in Golf - will be able to . . .

  • Screen your body to find dysfunction (if any) in your pelvis, knees or shoulders.
  • Assess spinal lumbar and thoracic mobility as well as nerve mobility.
  • Measure results which are recorded
  • Prescribe METs (Muscle Energy Techniques) to release muscle spasms and improve range of motion.

Golfers like Bryson DeChambeau and Kyle Berkshire do not have “traditional styles”. They are using cutting edge technology and science to get the most out of their game.  Their results demonstrate excellent Intrinsic Biomechanic functions.

Take a look at this link.  Kyle Berkshire happens to be shirtless – but the reason I’m showing you this – is to emphasise the muscle utilisation and demonstrate how well he rotates.  He is brilliant!!!

Some relevant examples of how an Intrinsic Biomechanics Coach can help you . . .

1.  The golfer who has a leg length discrepancy (LLD - “one leg longer than the other”) may present with . . .

  • the inability to turn around the body.
  • an upright back-swing.
  • head lifting on the back-swing.
  • coming down too steeply on the ball.

Well, how do you know if you have an LLD.  An Intrinsic Biomechanics Coach will be able to screen your body and tell you.

2.  The golfer with a driving distance problem!

  • myofascial lines are lengthened and shortened during a golf swing.
  • golf employs mostly the front (FFL) and back (BFL) functional and spiral (SL) lines.
  • they store and release energy within the movement.
  • if you can find the site of energy leakage, fix it!

Your Intrinsic Biomechanics Coach will know about myofascial lines.

3.  The golfer with a down swing problem!

There are a plethora of muscles, joints and systems working at the same time within your golf movement.

  • the subscapularis (one of the muscles in the shoulder) provides power throughout the swing, especially for acceleration on the down swing.
  • another muscle, the pectoralis minor, is responsible for shoulder protraction (you can’t rotate properly if your shoulders are retracted).

So ask yourself: “How do I know what is happening in my body when I’m playing golf?”  An Intrinsic Biomechanics Coach will be able to screen your body and tell you.

In Conclusion . . .

If you want to take your game to the next level, increase your tee-off driving distance or increase your club-head speed, then you should seriously consider Intrinsic Biomechanics.

Imagine going back to your Golf Pro, with a co-operating body . . . one that has increased mobility, less pain, a functional pelvis, and shoulder or knee stability.  Your game can only benefit and your Golf Pro’s instructions will be easier to accomplish !
