When Your Body Moves Freely, It Feels Amazing!

Let us work together, focus on your Intrinsic Biomechanics . . . and . . .
get you out there actively doing what you love.

What Is Intrinsic Biomechanics?

There are 2 Types of Biomechanics . . .
External and Intrinsic

EXTERNAL Biomechanics explores the external components of how the body moves and analyses the mechanics of the individual movements that create the desired motion.

INTRINSIC Biomechanics concentrates on the analysis of the INTERNAL structures and functions of the body during the process of executing EXTERNAL Biomechanics.

Intrinsic Biomechanics Coaching is the analysis and screening process of how the internal structures of the body perform while the body moves or is resting.

Our bodies are born unique, exposed to natural wear and tear, different habits, different repetitive movements and are often subjected to both short term and long-term injuries.

Some people may find it difficult to perform everyday tasks like . . . walking, getting down and up off the floor, picking up and carrying groceries. At some point, their body may have developed a dysfunction in the kinetic chain. for example, a muscle in spasm.

To enable the body to perform the task required, the body will naturally compensate for that dysfunction. Unfortunately, if we don’t correct the cause of the compensation, the more we repeat that task, the more damage we inflict upon our joints or body. Our body continues to overcompensate increasing the risk of permanent injury or chronic pain.

A person may be suffering with a “bad shoulder”, but in fact, it may not be the shoulder at all, but a dysfunction in the knee which is causing the problem further up the kinetic chain.

So we ask ourselves . .

  • How do we find out what is causing the problem?”
  • How am I structurally aligned?”
  • How do I know what to fix?”
  • How can I get my body back on track to do what I need it to do?

There is an answer.

Consult an Intrinsic Biomechanics Coach who may answer these questions for you and who is specifically trained to screen and assess the pelvis, knees, feet, shoulders, spinal mobility and nerve mobility.

Who should see an Intrinsic Biomechanics Coach?

  • ANYONE (So long as you are medically able to).
  • You don’t have to be a serious sports person.
  • You can be any age over 16.
  • You just need to be serious about wanting and committing to move more freely.

The Fundamental Benefits of
Intrinsic Biomechanics?

Reduces Wear and Tear on Joints and Ligaments

By restoring your body to work the way it is designed to, stress on joints is eased and pain can be significantly reduced, allowing you to move more freely.

Prevents Injury and Speeds up Recovery

91% of people with Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) injuries (in the knee), present with dysfunctional pelvis function.

Improves Athletic Performance

By improving nerve function, studies have shown that spinal velocity capability can significantly increase by 200% in some cases.

What an Intrinsic Biomechanics Coach does during a biomechanical assessment

  • Screens the body to find the cause of compensation, dysfunction or pain.
  • Assesses pelvis, shoulder, knee and foot function, muscle condition, and assesses spine and nerve mobility.
  • By addressing the cause of the problem, prescribing rehabilitative exercise and sometimes applying sports massage . . . pain may be alleviated, physical performance is increased and you can do the activities you love to do.

Happy Clients

I feel like I’ve done a serious squat workout. I guess my glutes have been “sleeping” for a while. I do notice my hips are less painful since starting the exercises you gave me. So far so good. 3 weeks in and I’m feeling MOTIVATED!!!

Jackie Morton-Sheppard

I can’t believe it! I cut 3 MINUTES off my bike time at time trials last week!! Not only that, I don’t run like an old man anymore - I literally felt my hips “shift” during my run and I wasn’t dragging my foot anymore. I’m going to keep doing Biomechanics!!!! Whatever it is, it’s working!

I found the Biomechanics Screening process to be so interesting! So many little nuggets of information to digest. Our bodies are quite amazing machines! Thanks for helping me sort out my niggles. Its great to be out running again :)

Clare Williams

Since having my son 2 years ago, I’ve been on constant pain medication. I can honestly say that today is the first day I have not felt the need to medicate. Its been 2 months of doing Biomechanics exercises, but it’s now part of my daily routine and I feel so good when I’ve done them. I’ve become so much more active and fun to be around. Thank You!

Intrinsic Biomechanics for Sport and Exercise

What I Expect From My Clients And What
My Clients Can Expect From Me

I offer my clients detailed Intrinsic Biomechanics Screening Sessions and Bespoke Coaching Programmes to help with their permanent rehabilitation.  The screening sessions that I conduct, help me to identify areas that might be causing clients' discomfort or pain; and allow me to develop effective corrective programmes that are truly bespoke to each client.  I treat all of my clients as ‘individuals’, each with their own unique stories and circumstances.

Intrinsic Biomechanics is not a “quick fix”. Results might be immediate or they may take a little time. However, what I will provide will be an enlightening experience for you. I will be there to support you and keep you motivated during your 4-6 weeks programme.

We will work together to create a realistic plan of action, advising you how to look after yourself with very simple exercise techniques that will improve the way you move, allowing for improved function. Your bespoke programme will be set up so that you can use it whenever required or as a long-term maintenance programme.  You will be in control of your self-care. My clients fix themselves; I just show them how to do it!

While not a medical programme, Intrinsic Biomechanics Coaching has had a huge amount of success with low grade, non-specific aches, niggles, recurring injuries, and pains. However, if medical conditions are present, this must be considered in advance; and we may seek advice from your doctor or current therapist.

Frequently Asked Questions

What can I expect at an Intrinsic Biomechanics Screening session?

Some screens and assessments will be lying on a treatment couch, some sitting, some standing and if possible, some small hopping ones.

None of the screens are strenuous and you do not have to do anything you feel uncomfortable with.

How long does the Intrinsic Biomechanical Assessment take?

The initial assessment will require up to 1½ hours to complete.

An essential 1 hour follow-up appointment should be scheduled 1-3 days from your initial assessment. This is to
re-screen and measure your body’s response to your Intrinsic Biomechanics Coaching. Adjustments to your programme could be required.

Follow-up screens on day 8, 18 & 32 (approximately) should be expected.

What should I wear to an Intrinsic Biomechanics Screening?

You should wear loose clothing, training shoes, shorts, running tights or leggings to enable me to assess each joint in the leg, including your foot & ankle.

I will need to see your shoulders and spine too, so for ladies - a strappy vest top is preferred. This can be hitched up to allow me to see the spine. For gents, I may ask them to remove their top.

Can I bring a friend or family member to the Intrinsic Biomechanics Screening session?

Unfortunately, due to Covid restrictions, you cannot bring a friend or family member with you to your assessment. Please ensure you follow UK Government Guidelines regarding Covid.  A mask is not required in the treatment room.

Do I need to see a doctor before an Intrinsic Biomechanical Assessment?

While not a medical programme nor diagnostic, Intrinsic Biomechanics Coaching has had a huge amount of success with low grade, non-specific aches, niggles, recurring injuries and pains. However, if medical conditions are present this must be considered in advance; and we may seek advice from your doctor or current therapist.

When you choose to go ahead, I will send you the relevant medical forms to be completed. All evidence of medical conditions that you have/had (if any), MRI scans, reports or x-rays should be emailed to me prior to your appointment.

How will Vanessa support me through my Biomechanics programme?

During the initial 5 weeks, our goals are to identify problem areas, assess which exercises are of the greatest benefit to you, monitor your adherence to the programme, make any necessary changes to your daily routine at home/work and to get you onto the second phase as quickly as possible.

My contact will initially be daily, to help support, monitor and advise you.

As a necessary part of my service, you will have access to my advice via email, phone or video calling.

I will supply you with your notes and documents to refer to, for future use.

My aim is that you learn to “listen” to your body and leave my services with tools that empower you to manage your own physical health, so that you can live your life and do the things you love to do.
